Chanel’s Resort 2015 collection gets Dubai Talking

Karl Lagerfeld debuted Chanel’s Resort 2015 collection on an island in Dubai.

Lagerfeld is known for courting controversy by referencing local customs in hyperbolic fashion and the Dubai Island show was no exception. There were hookahs, artificial palm trees, and what appeared to be traditional Moorish latticework—which, upon closer examination, was revealed to be comprised of the brand’s trademark interlocking Cs.

The clothing, too, nodded in an emphatically clichéd way to the Arab environs, with a great many harem pants, the Dubai skyline rendered in sequins, and crescent-moon hair adornments. 

Was this Chanel’s nod to sharia, one of the primary sources of law in the United Arab Emirates, which, according to some interpretations, requires that women in public be covered from head to toe?

Lagerfeld called the collection his “romantic, modern Orient, a new One Thousand and One Nights.” But his inspiration, as asserted by the Independent, could well be simple economics: it probably will sell in the Middle East. So long as no one was too put off by the quilted gold gas can—a purse that was an obvious acknowledgment of the Gulf’s natural resources.

“A lot of people really got offended,” said Deena Aljuhani Abdulaziz, who owns D’NA, a high-end boutique with locations in Riyadh and Doha, and attended the show. “Some people in this region were definitely not amused that he had a bag that looked like an oil dispenser. Money in the gulf comes from oil obviously, so they thought it was a bit of a Beverly Hillbillies situation.”

This unique treasure comes with a daring minaudière case conceived by the Italian designer himself. It is crafted from gold-plated brass printed with a croco effect. The eagle-shaped tassel asserts the flamboyant majesty of this most sophisticated Baroque piece.

The bottle and its minaudière are displayed in a visually striking lockable jewel case made of rich brown and leopard printed satin.

Mall of the Emirates announces New Season of "World of Fashion"

This season, fashion events in Dubai are kicking it a notch up. And the malls are in on it too.

Mall of the Emirates has announced the new season of its own star-studded event called World of Fashion, to be held from October 3 to 14.

The 12-day event will be led by none other than Arab superstar Nancy Ajram, a regular to the city and will feature more than 20 runway shows, style talks and makeover sessions to promote the latest autumn-winter fashion.

Ajram will appear on October 9, and will be at Mall of the Emirates throughout the day, meeting competition winners and fans and being interviewed on the main stage.

Roberto Cavalli announces the opening of the ‘Roberto Cavalli Junior’ shop in shop in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.

The ‘Roberto Cavalli Junior’ store was inaugurated August 7th 2013 in the prestigious Mall of Emirates, point of reference for the luxury brands and important shopping destination in the United Arab Emirates.

VOGUE CAFÉ DUBAI – FASHION THROUGH THE AGES EXHIBITION

We're very excited to announce that the Fashion Through the Ages exhibition has now opened at the site of the soon-to-launch Vogue Café in level Shoe District, The Dubai Mall.

 

Beginning the journey with an Art Nouveau-inspired Vogue cover from 1919, illustrated by Helen Dryden, the visuals become bolder and brighter with the onset of the roaring 20s, where visionary covers echo the adventurous spirit of the Art Deco movement. In sharp contrast, black & white images follow that capture the wartime era, whilst still highlighting the sheer elegance and power of sitters Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel and Marlene Dietrich. This theme is carried over into the 1940s, where an evident post-war world is respectfully portrayed with an incredible fashion moment captured within a bombed-out London townhouse 

 

1950s fashion epitomised class and refinement, with some of the most beautiful imagery highlighting the subtle transition of women in society, with fluid lines and streamline shapes paving the way for the swinging 60s, where the fall of taboos gave way to the rise of the mini skirt, and cultural icons such as Twiggy and Brigitte Bardot defined the modern woman.

 

The early 70s shows continuation of 60s fashion in the form of heavily lashed eyes and bold styling, with cover stars such as Jerry Hall symbolising the sexual revolution of the era. This eventually leads into the explosion of the 80’s scene, heavily influenced by the music genres of the decade – Punk, Glam Rock, New Romantic, New Wave and Pop.

 

The 80s and 90s saw the age of the supermodel, as Vogue editorial gave us Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford - and later Kate Moss, who leads the journey through into the 21^st century.  

 

 

With spectacular imagery selected from the archives of Vogue – the world’s most influential fashion glossy – Fashion Through the Ages demonstrates a fascinating style timeline, with over 50 defining images on display.

 

This is a free event open to the public, with the exhibition timings coinciding with the mall's operating hours, which are

I know it looks easy, this gig. Casting around for someone who's put her clothes on the right way. How hard can it be? Well, I tell you, folks, some weeks the women of the world just don't make the effort.

Or they do and it's too flouncy or too slutty or too monochrome stripy (bored already!) or too head-to-toe designer at said designer's party.

As a woman who lives, works and gets dressed in the real world all I'm looking for is an inspiring woman who looks like she does the same. That's all. But some days, and I'll say it again, it's hard.

However, this week, in amongst the style detritus of Geri Halliwell's knee-high boots and some particularly painful red carpet numbers I found a little glint of loveliness.

Paparazzo Killed While Following Justin Bieber

We just heard over the radio, Virgin Radio Dubai to be specific, that a celebrity gossip photographer was trailing Bieber's Ferrari last night when it was pulled over for a routine traffic stop.

Upon being told by an officer to move back because his shooting pictures of the car was creating an unsafe situation, this cameraman was hit by an oncoming vehicle and killed.

The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the incident, but authorities say neither drugs nor alcohol played a role for anyone involved.

Moreover, it has now been determined that Bieber was not even in his car at time of the tragedy.

This is by far the most disturbing, but it is not the first incident involving Justin and the paparazzi on the road.

In July, Bieber was cited for excessive speeding as he tried to elude a photographer on his tail; and in May, the artist was accused of battery by a "journalist" who was allegedly blocking his car and claimed Bieber shoved him when he refused to move.

Katy Perry & Usher to Rock Dubai at the World Parachuting Championships Closing Ceremony

DONE Events announced last Wednesday that global platinum artist, Katy Perry, and Grammy award-winning international artist, Usher, will perform live at the World Parachuting Championships Closing Ceremony in Dubai on Saturday, 8 of December at Meydan Racecourse.

"It is a great privilege for DONE Events to produce this event and to promote such an amazing line up of talent-welcoming Usher back to Dubai and finally presenting Katy Perry to what will be a packed Meydan Racecourse," said Thomas Ovesen, COO of DONE Events.

After eight weeks of competition, the World Parachuting Championships will come to a close on 8 of December, beginning with an awards ceremony and victory parade to celebrate the winners from the previous week, followed by a high energy spectacular performance from Usher that will feature smash hits from his 17 year career as well as from his current album, "Looking 4 Myself," and ending with Katy Perry's live show, featuring all of her biggest hits, including "Fireworks."

Dates for Dubai Shopping Festival 2013 Announced
