Organised by the Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment (DEPE), this year’s Dubai Shopping Festival’s theme is ‘Dubai at its best’, highlighting the city’s superior hospitality.

This year’s DSF will run from January 3 to February 3.

The opening ceremony promises to be a spectacular show that celebrates the city’s culture and heritage. A stunning sound and light show at the Dubai Creek will trace the history of the city.

It will followed by splendid fireworks at the Dubai Creek, Al Seef Street and Festival Promenade.

Dubai retailers have already announced up to 75 per cent discounts on electronics, jewellery, watches, perfumes and textiles.

Apart from discounts and deals, shoppers will also get a chance to win big prizes at raffle draws.

The Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group has announced chances to win gold every day during the fest, and the Lexus Mega Raffle is offering a grand prize of LX50.

The organisers will also line up many international celebrities, designers and artists to add glitz and glam to the fest.

Some of the most notable performers will be guitar legend Slash who will jam with Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators on January 31 at the Dubai Tennis Stadium.

There’s also ghazal maestro Pankaj Udhas  who is scheduled to perform on January 10 at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

An insight into the bedouin’s desert life in different Arab countries will be presented at the Festival Promenade. The “World of Souvenirs” and the “Tea Oasis” will be hosted on Al Seef Street, while a sports zone and skill games area will be pitched on Al Rigga Street.

The Creek Park will also come alive with the Kids Festival Park during the entire DSF month.

The Downtown will turn fashionably spectacular by parading the latest in designer finery. A street fashion and make-up show are just some of the many highlights.

The Heritage Village will focus on the traditional lifestyle through numerous stalls of Emirati food and artifacts.

Another highpoint will be the Carnival, which will be held every weekend of the fest, showcasing dancers, percussionists, jugglers, unicyclists, stilt walkers and more.

The Global Village is another major attraction that will allow visitors to explore the various cultures of the world in one place. It also offers a host of entertainment and eating out options.

Tiny tots will also be treated to fun events, with the Dubai Dolphinarium organising an exclusive show, and cartoon and circus shows.

The organisers DEPE have also announced their decision to award journalists who cover the fest impressively. Journalists from English or Arabic newspapers and magazines will be judged on categories like best feature, DSF prolific writer, best editorial and design team, and best feature-online portal.

Vogue Café and GQ Bar to open in Dubai Mall

Dubai Mall is preparing to welcome the Vogue café and a GQ bar, both titles belonging to Condé Nast.

Diversification is the name of the game over at Condé Nast. The international publishing house responsible for Vogue , Vanity Fair , Glamour and GQ already has designs on a fashion college , and is now set to conquer the Middle East with a Vogue café and GQ bar.

A new Vogue Café (there is already one in Russia) is slated to launch in Dubai by the end of the year, but this being glossy fashion bible Vogue , it will be housed inside the world's largest shoe store.
Level Shoe District, a 96,000 sq ft luxury retail space, will stock more than 250 shoe brands and is situated in Dubai Mall at the foot of the world's tallest skyscraper - the 828 metre-high Burj Khalifa.

"The expatriate community and the local Emirati community are very conscious of brands," said Stuart Nielsen, director of Conde Nast's restaurant division, which was launched in 2010. "People always love to eat and drink, and we see an opportunity because they love fashion."

The Vogue Café will not serve alcohol, but a hotel-based bar inspired by its men's title, GQ , is being plotted for launch in Dubai early next year, would.

The company is planning to open another GQ Bar in Istanbul this year, and has signed deals for Condé Nast establishments in Bangkok and Singapore, Nielsen said. It is also considering opening cafés in Mideast cities closer to Dubai, including Kuwait City and the Emirati capital, Abu Dhabi.

FG10 covers: The Making if the GUCCI BAG!

FRIDA GIANNINI
creative director of Gucci

Frida Giannini’s unique talent and modern vision have fueled her rise as the leading creative force behind one of the world’s most celebrated fashion houses.

Born in Rome in 1972 to an architect father and art history professor mother, Giannini studied fashion design at Rome’s Fashion Academy before apprenticing in a small ready-to-wear house.  In 1997, she went to Fendi where she worked as a ready-to-wear designer for three seasons before being named designer for Fendi leathergoods.

In September 2002 she joined Gucci as Handbag Design Director.  Two years later she was appointed to a newly created post, Creative Director of Accessories, where she assumed unprecedented control of bags, shoes, luggage, small leathergoods, silks, fine jewelry, gifts, watches as well as eyewear.  Giannini flourished in this expanded role, and brought a powerful new perspective to Gucci’s accessories collections.  Using the Gucci archives as a starting point, she transformed house classics such as the Flora scarf pattern and equestrian iconography into novel and hugely successful designs.

In 2005, she was named Creative Director of Gucci Women’s ready-to-wear, in addition to her responsibility for all accessories.  In 2006, she took over menswear, thus rising to sole Creative Director of the label.  Giannini accepted this significant responsibility with aplomb, quickly establishing her individual stamp on the house. Her design approach and focused management style are informed by sharp confidence and decisiveness, as well as her uniquely feminine and distinctly Italian point of view.

The combination has proven to be powerful, as witnessed by her consistent ability to design collections, which not only influence global fashion trends but that are also directional at retail. Under Giannini, a new design oeuvre for Gucci has emerged, one which celebrates the house’s inimitable past and its expertise in luxury craftsmanship, all the while adding youth, color and a playful extravagance.

In Its 90th Year Gucci Brings Florentine
Craftsmanship to Dubai

May 11th, 2011 – In the year that sees the celebration of its 90th anniversary, tonight Gucci will host a private cocktail party at its store in the Dubai Mall on occasion of the Artisan Corner, an exclusive event that brings the craftsmanship of Gucci’s Florentine leather goods factory directly to its clientele. On May 11th and 12th, the House's most skilled artisans will be stationed at custom-built workshops and will offer a unique viewing of time-honored traditions.  As they assemble some of the most iconic handbags, customers can witness first hand the meticulous attention to detail and superb craftsmanship that is involved in the production of every item in Gucci’s leather goods collection.

The hand-crafted products will be personalized with hand-embossed monogramming and will feature a special inside plaque embossed with the location and date. Clients that make a purchase during this event will receive a personal letter from Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini, thanking them for their purchase.   The Artisan Corner display includes custom work tables, a sewing machine, a leather stand, and metal tools, as well as additional background materials which show the products’ evolution from mood board to sketches. An accompanying video display will show Gucci’s artisans at work over the years, also reflecting the fact that these skills are handed down through family generations.

Following Dubai, the Artisan Corner will travel to Kuwait and Qatar later this month.
