The NEW Cruise 2011 CHRIS BENZ collection re-imagines a refined exoticism through the American lens. Graphic prints, gently sparkling textures, and an overall softness reflect the spirit of midcentury California sculptor Sascha Brastoff and the humour and playfulness of 1950’s Los Angeles women –
A modern Carmen Miranda. The conventions of her wardrobe are re-imagined, as buttery cotton sateen plays off featherweight artisanal tweeds and delicate cashmere. The rich metallic’s of the prior season are carried through with an influx of rich duchess satin, micro-paillette embroideries, and dimensional guipure lace. A lush, enthusiastic spirit pervades the collection by way of tattered chiffon appliqué and ribbon tie details. Hand-cut florabunda appliqué creates explosive texture in both classic shirting and layered dresses. Cashmere fisherman-handknits in exuberant colours provide nostalgic warmth. A Sponge Print grasscloth echoes the provincial California notions of sunbleached umbrellas and cabana upholstery.
Other prints include the high-contrast, oversize graphic black-and-white Brastoff Print, and the Vine Floral, both inspired by sweeping 1950’s patterns. Proportions are restrained, expressed in cigarette pants, box-cut jackets and column dresses. This refinement is balanced by luche draped blouses, dresses and flowing cocktail pants.
